China Taiwan news: Beijing carried out its largest-ever military drills in the Taiwan strait during Pelosi's trip and has accused the US of working against its official policy on China and Taiwan.
"China's actions are fundamentally at odds with the goal of peace and stability. They are part of an intensified pressure campaign against Taiwan," said Kurt Campbell, Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for the Indo Pacific.

Five of the missiles fired by China landed in Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone off Hateruma, an island far south of Japan's main islands, Japanese Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi reported.

China earlier announced that military exercises by its navy, air force and other departments were underway in six zones surrounding Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary.
