A three-judge bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, and Justices Sanjay Kumar and K V Viswanathan heard the matter in the Supreme Court. The Places of Worship Act was introduced in 1991 during the tenure of the Congress government under the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao.
