The gauge had gained 717.91 points in the previous four sessions as investor risk appetite soared after US-based Moody's last week upgraded India's sovereign credit rating by a notch to 'Baa2'.
The Sensex opened hit the day's high of 33,165.15 before settling up 346.38 points, or 1.06 per cent, at 33,106.82. This is the highest closing of November 10 when it had closed at 33,314.56.
The opening for the 30-share Sensex was positive, but positivity ended there as the index started rolling down afterwards. It settled at an over three-week low of 32,760.44, down 181.43 points, or 0.55 pc.
The BSE Sensex after a better start at 32,990.03, quickly regained the key 33,000-mark to hit a high of 33,126.55 on value-buying at select counters and recovery in the rupee at the outset.
For the week, the Sensex recorded a fall of 371 points, or 1.10 per cent, and the NSE Nifty 130.75 points, or 1.25 per cent.
Airtel, Tata Steel, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever, SBI, NTPC, Dr Reddy's, Adani Ports, Bajaj Auto, Wipro, Infosys and TCS posted moderate gains.
The 30-share BSE index firmed up to an all-time intra-day high of 33,733.71 on a flurry of buying, breaching its previous record of 33,657.57 hit yesterday. Finally, it closed at a fresh record of 33,685.56.
The shares of Sun Pharma, Lupin and Cipla rose whereas those of Hero MotoCorp and Hindustan Unilever fell.
The Sensex settled at a new closing peak of 33,600.27, up 387.14 points, or 1.17 per cent. The index surpassed its previous closing record of 33,266.16, touched on October 30.
