Earlier scheduled for February 17, SpaceX delayed the launch, saying more time was needed for final checks of the Falcon 9 rocket's upgraded payload fairing.
The three boosters and 27 engines roared to life at Kennedy Space Center, where thousands gathered to watch the launch which had been delayed by high wind.
The Falcon Heavy has three first-stage boosters, strapped together with 27 engines in all.
The Air Force's 45th Space Wing said that launch operations at KSC and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station are on hold until the shutdown is resolved.
