Ramaphosa was elected unopposed in the National Assembly this afternoon. The announcement was welcomed by singing in the National Assembly.
The 400-member parliament, dominated by the ruling African National Congress party, is expected to select Ramaphosa to finish his predecessor’s term, which ends with elections in 2019.
Zuma, who has been in power since 2009, faces numerous allegations of corruption.
Addressing the media after an ANC Parliamentary Caucus meeting this afternoon, ANC Treasurer-General Paul Mashatile confirmed that 75-year-old Zuma had defied a recall from his party.
Zuma faces the allegations of corruption as his links in recent years to a wealthy India-born Gupta family is believed to have influenced the government.
