The gift is reportedly meant to remind Kim of commitments he made to Trump when the two came face-to-face last month for the summit.
Delegations from both sides met at about 10 a.m. at the Peace House in the border village of Panmunjom, Xinhua news agency reported.
The visit marks the first of a US Defence Secretary to China since 2014 and comes just a week after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
The two sides, however, still have to negotiate the terms under which the North would give up its nukes and win relief from sanctions — a goal that has eluded US administrations for a quarter-century.
Dana White, spokeswoman for the Defence Department, said planning for the summer drills has stopped, but there have been no decisions made on any other military exercises with South Korea.
"Our world has seen more than enough conflict. If there's a chance at peace, if there's a chance to end the horrible threat of nuclear conflict, then we must pursue it at all costs," Trump said in a video message.
According to the South Korean Defence Ministry, the meeting kicked off on the northern side of the truce village of Panmunjom at 10 a.m.
North Korea leader is very possessive about his security which is why he has brought his own food and a portable toilet with him.
The meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has resulted in 'a comprehensive agreement' between the two nations. Kim declared "world will see a major change" and he and Trump "decided to leave the past behind" .
