Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the state has formed a task force to ensure timely distribution of coronavirus vaccine. At a virtual meeting with PM Modi, Thackeray said the state government is in touch with Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India (SII), which is the partner in the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine for coronavirus.
Pune based Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech are likely to conduct late-stage clinical trials of intranasal coronavirus vaccine once they receive regulatory approval, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Sunday. The clinical trials of nasal coronavirus vaccine in India are expected to start in a few months.
At present, Pune-based drug SII is conducting phase 2 and 3 trials of the coronavirus vaccine. Serum Institute of India can produce 700-800 million vaccine dosages every year once things are streamlined, Dr Jadav added.
The Serum Institute of India (SII) on Tuesday said it would produce upto an additional 100 million COVID-19 vaccine doses for India in 2021. Other than for India, the COVID-19 vaccines will also be produced for low and middle-income countries, the Serum Institute of India said.
