In the previous session, the BSE barometer ended 1,011.29 points or 3.20 per cent lower at 30,636.71, while the Nifty plummeted 280.40 points, or 3.03 per cent, to 8,981.45.
Around 1 p.m., Sensex was trading at 30,436.32, lower by 1,211.68 points or 3.83 per cent from the previous close of 31,648. It had opened at 30,836.19 and has touched an intra-day high of 30,900.12 and a low of 30,407.01 points.
Maruti was the top laggard in the Sensex pack, sinking up to 7 per cent, followed by Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and ONGC.
Infosys jumped over 3 per cent ahead of its quarterly earnings, scheduled to be announced later in the day. Kotak Bank, HDFC, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech and TCS were also trading in the green.

Sensex was trading at 29,136.53, higher by 1,545.58 points or 5.60 per cent, from the previous close of 27,590.95. It had opened at 28,898.36 and has so far touched an intra-day high of 29,180.31 and a low of 28,602.31.
Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 2.66 per cent to USD 33.93 per barrel on fresh hopes an OPEC-led meeting this week will reach an agreement to reduce oversupply and shore up the market.
