The strategically important all-weather Atal Tunnel, the longest highway tunnel in the world, has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 9.02 km-long tunnel connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley throughout the year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the strategically important all-weather Atal Tunnel, which reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km and the travel time by four to five hours, at Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday.
Amid the heightened border tension with both China and Pakistan in the Himalayas, road infrastructure projects have been given a push with completion of a marvel of engineering motorways -- the Rohtang Pass highway tunnel.
The government will name the strategic tunnel under Rohtang Pass after former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth anniversary on Wednesday. The historic decision to construct a strategic tunnel below the Rohtang Pass was taken on June 3, 2000 when Vajpayee was the prime minister.
The labourer identified as Mjahir was working as a carpenter in the 8.8-km-long tunnel being built under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, Kullu Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh said.
The 8.8-km-long Rohtang tunnel being built on the Leh-Manali highway may become operational in next six months, an official spokesperson said here on Friday.
