Enhanced rainfall activity is very likely over south peninsular India till August 30. It is likely to reduce thereafter, the IMD added.
According to the disaster management department, the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric level and is tilting southwards with height.
IMD has issued a yellow alert for 10 districts on Friday. It has also issued a heavy rainfall alert for few Kerala districts on Saturday and Sunday.
The IMD said the entire monsoon trough lies close to the foothills of the Himalayas. It is likely to remain there till August 26.
The IMD has also predicted an enhanced rainfall activity over the northeast, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, and Bihar from August 24.
The orange alert, which is valid till Sunday morning, has been issued for 24 districts, including Dhar, Ratlam, Ujjain and Dewas districts, PK Saha, a senior meteorologist with the IMD's Bhopal office, said.
There will be a gradual increase in rainfall activity over northwest India and Bihar with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy falls, very likely over Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand till August 23, it said in a release.
