Rahul Gandhi is visiting Punjab for the first time after the election dates were announced on January 8 by the Election Commission of India.
Five-time Chief Minister Badal had won the 2017 Assembly elections from this seat by defeating Capt Amarinder Singh with 22,770 votes. Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called up Badal on phone to enquire about his health as he tested positive for the Covid-19.
Booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act last month, Bikram Singh Majithia has been trying to secure an anticipatory bail from courts.
Punjab will go to the polls in a single phase on February 20 with the counting of the votes slated on March 10.
On the question of why his Malvika Sood joined Congress, Sonu Sood said that "Moga has a large number of people associated with Congress. We grew up with people who were associated with Congress."
Captain Amarinder Singh, who has floated a new party after leaving Congress and is fighting Punjab assembly polls in an alliance with BJP, said he was told that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will be grateful if he can keep Sidhu in the government.
The three parties -- BJP, Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) of Captain Amarinder Singh and SAD (Sanyukt) of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa will announce manifesto for the Punjab polls together.
Bhagwant Mann will contest from Dhuri constituency in Sangrur district in the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.
Arvind Kejriwal said that the AAP government in Delhi has done a number of good works like providing free electricity and water and asked Delhiites to urge voters in poll-bound states to give a chance to the AAP.
"An FIR has been lodged under IPC Section 153-A and Section 125 in The Representation of the People Act," said Malerkotla Senior Superintendent of Police, Ravjot Kaur Grewal.
The PLC has been allotted 37 to contest out of the 117 seats in the state as part of its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and SAD (Sanyukt), with discussions still in progress on possibly another five seats for the party, he said.
Taking a swipe at Punjab Chief minister Charanjt Singh Channi, AAP national convenor said that he will not cry like him on ED raids.
Calling ED's raid and opposition scurrilous attacks a 'political vendetta' ahead of Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections, CM said, "BJP is using central agencies to take revenge from me."
The Election Commission has already announced the dates and all the political parties have started flexing their muscles in the poll-bound states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab.
The seven-phased polls in Uttar Pradesh will take place on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, March 3 and 7. Voting in Manipur will take place in two phases on February 27 and March 3, while Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa elections will be conducted in a single phase on February 14. The results will be declared on March 10.
Announcing the list, BJP National General Secy, Tarun Chugh, said tickets have been given to 12 candidates who belong to farmers' families, 8 tickets to members of the SC community, 13 tickets to Sikhs. The list has doctors, lawyers, sportspersons, farmers, youth, women & former IAS, he aaded.
Channi will fight the February 20 state assembly polls from the Chamkaur Sahib seat. The Aam Aadmi Party has been attacking Channi ever since the ED carried out raids at many places including at the premises of Channi's nephew.
Channi alleged that Kejriwal was in the habit of levelling accusations to malign the image of others and that in the past it was seen how he had to later apologise to BJP leaders Nitin Gadkari, late Arun Jaitley and SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia.
According to the seat-sharing arrangement between the two parties, the BSP will field candidates in 20 of the 117 Assembly seats in Punjab, while the rest will be contested by the SAD.
