A civil society organisation in Assam has filed an FIR with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against former state coordinator of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Prateek Hajela, for alleged misappropriation of funds meant for the NRC project. One Rajib Deka of the Assam Public Works (APW) has filed the FIR at the Guwahati office of the CBI on Thursday.
The Supreme Court had transferred NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela, asking the Assam government to suggest names of officers who could succeed Hajela. Sarma was involved in the NRC works till 2016, when he moved out of the NRC directorate
The apex court on October 18 had ordered the Centre and the Assam government to transfer Hajela to his native state Madhya Pradesh within seven days.
Mr Hajela, 48, is a 1995 batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.
The APW, as the primary petitioner, had submitted five memoranda in the Supreme Court requesting re-verification of the draft NRC but they were rejected, he said. "The 27 per cent re-verification done by him (NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela) is a mystery. No one knows whether or not it was 100 per cent flawless," Sharma said. He also expressed "strong doubt" on the software used as names of many doubtful voters had entered the draft NRC.
