PM Modi last visited Singapore in November 2018 and his current visit comes ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries. Singapore is one of India's key allies in the ASEAN region and is its sixth-largest trading partner.
PM Modi will also call on Singapore's President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and interact with the Singaporean leadership. His visit comes ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 10th anniversary of the Strategic Partnership.
PM Modi thanked Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah for inviting him for the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian leader and extended an invitation to him to visit India. The two leaders also held bilateral talks covering defence, trade and investment, food security, education and more.
PM Modi met the Sultan at the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, which boasts of 22-carat gold adornments, five swimming pools, 1,700 bedrooms, 257 bathrooms and more. He is the first Indian leader to visit Brunei for a bilateral visit as the countries celebrate 40 years of diplomatic ties.
PM Modi will become the first Indian leader to make a bilateral visit to Brunei Darussalam on Tuesday (September 3). He is expected to engage with the top leadership in bilateral discussions and explore new areas of cooperation apart from defence, trade, energy and space.
