Heavy rains in Sri Lanka exceeding 300 mm have triggered floods, caused landslides and uprooted trees in several parts, trapping thousands of people. The government has suspended electricity supply in some areas and schools have been shut in the wake of this situation.
Taiwan suffered a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, its most powerful tremor in 25 years, along with 300 aftershocks. At least ten people have been killed while closer to 1,070 people have been wounded.
Heavy rains were forecast in the quake-hit areas on Wednesday raising fears of landslides, authorities said, which could further hinder efforts to free many more trapped under rubble. Access to the remote location of the hardest-hit areas has been complicated due to damaged infrastructure.
