The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), comprising Imran Khan-backed independents, filed a motion against a Peshawar High Court order barring it from reserved seats. Despite winning most seats in the elections, the PTI-backed independents were not eligible for reserved seats meant for political parties.
Omar is the grandson of Pakistan's first military ruler Ayub Khan and was named as Imran Khan's PTI candidate for PM against Shehbaz Sharif. Unlike other PTI-backed independents, Omar did not join the Sunni Ittehad Council to contest internal elections and became PTI's secretary general.
Ayaz Sadiq won 199 out of the 291 votes in the election held today in the National Assembly, beating his PTI-backed rival Amir Dogar, who won only 91 votes. PML-N has formed a coalition with Bilawal Bhutto-led PPP and four smaller parties to keep Imran Khan's PTI out of power.
