"Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will not make any difference. The condition of the people is deteriorating day by day and their problems will not be solved by this election. This is the continuity of the same status quo which has prevailed in the country from the beginning," said a local resident.
The oath ceremony was attended by Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and other PML-N workers. PPP’s Murad Ali Shah and Sarfaraz Bugti were also in attendance.
The PML-N president Shehbaz is the younger brother of former three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif, 74, who sprang a surprise last month after being projected as the party's prime ministerial candidate ahead of the February 8.
Since the general elections were held on February 8, the presidential election is required to be conducted by March 9, just two days before the retirement of half of the 100-member Senate.

Notably, the polls did not return a clear majority for anyone, but independent candidates backed by Imran Khan won 92 out of 264 seats making them the largest group. Khan ruled out alliances with the three largest parties, which means his candidate currently lacks the numbers to form a government.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced that President Alvi would invite the party to form a government following their reported majority in the National Assembly. Despite securing 100 seats officially, the PTI claims victory in 170 seats, with 133 needed for government formation.
The counting began on Thursday evening at a snail’s pace after polling was over at 5 pm. Pakistan Election Commission data show Independents backed by PTI as leading, with PML-N and PPP following closely.
As the results of 250 constituencies were declared, both Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan claimed victories, even as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independents won most seats overall. Nawaz's PML-N and Bilawal Bhutto's PPP have agreed on a coalition government at the Centre and Punjab province.
Pakistan Elections 2024: Shehbaz was also asked if he would prefer to become the prime minister instead of putting the burden of the top job on his brother, who may not be able to discharge responsibilities properly due to advanced age and health issues.
Pakistan election 2024 voting process is scheduled to begin at 8 am (03:00 GMT) and will continue, without a break, till 5 pm (12:00 GMT). Those already in the queue to vote at 5 pm will be allowed to vote even if that extends the process.
