SC had earlier passed a slew of directions for care and protection of children who have become orphans or have lost one parent or were abandoned during the pandemic.
The study estimates that 1,134,000 children lost a parent or custodial grandparent due to COVID-19. Of these, 10,42,000 children lost their mother, father or both. Most lost one, not both parents.
Addressing a press conference here, he said that the force has formulated a special plan "Reach out, secure and rehabilitate" for protecting Covid orphans.
The state government has already launched Mahtari Dular Yojna to provide free education and monthly scholarship to the children studying in government schools, who have lost their parents/guardians to COVID-19.
The NCPCR had sounded the alarm on a spate of complaints about illegal adoption of children orphaned by Covid-19 through private individual and organisations
Director of education, D R Bhagat, issued a circular to this effect, asking the institutes to compile a data of such students and submit it to the department by Monday.
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has told the Supreme Court that the pandemic has orphaned 1,742 children, out of which at least 140 children have been left abandoned, while 7,464 children have lost at least one of their parents.

As directed by Collector, when COVID patients are admitted to hospitals, medical officers who are present at the time have to get a form filled from them regarding the custody of their children in the event of their death, the official said.
