A NASA Mars orbiter has spotted the agency's opportunity rover on the Red Planet for the first time since it went into hibernation.
Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the US believe that the rover will soon receive enough sunlight to automatically initiate recovery procedures, if it is not damaged.
"Opportunity site have shown no active dust storms for some time within 3,000 kms of the rover site," says MARCI. While NASA is hopeful that the rover will attempt to call home, the team is also prepared for an extended period of silence.
Curiosity, which landed on Mars in 2012, was sent on a mission to determine the planet's "habitability." It is currently keeping its "eyes" on a dust event that went global by June 20.
