The solid-fuel, battlefield missile developed by DRDO is based on Prithvi Defence Vehicle from the Indian ballistic missile programme.
The "copy book flight" followed pre-planned trajectory and met all objectives, the sources in DRDO said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO for the successful flight trial of Abhyas. The current test was carried out as a part of developmental flight trials.
India has in its armoury the Agni missile series -- Agni-1 with a range of 700 km, Agni-2 with a range of 2,000 km, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with 2,500 km to more than 3,500 km range.
Agni-I missile has a specialised navigation system which ensures it reaches the target with a high degree of accuracy and precision.
The interceptor was launched from Abdul Kalam Island at about 8.05 pm, sources said.
