The party is trying hard to defuse the controversy amid protests from Muslim groups that have erupted since the comments were made by the party spokesperson Nupur Sharma during a TV debate.

The case was registered at Kondhwa police station on Tuesday on a complaint lodged by Abdul Gafur Pathan, a former corporator of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
