NPR: The ministry report stated that due to Covid-19 pandemic, the work of updating the NPR and other field activities had come to a halt.
The new NPR will have 21 categories for which people have to give information compared to the previous NPR which had only 15 categories to be filled. Opposition has hit out at the Modi government saying NPR will be used for NRC, however, Home Minister Amit Shah has said that there is no connection between NPR and NRC.

Earlier on Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that NPR had nothing to do with NRC. Attacking Owaisi, Amit Shah had said: "I am not surprised by the stand taken by Owaisi ji. If we say the sun rises from the east, then Owaisi sahab would say it rises from the west."
The data for National Population Register was collected in 2010 along with the house-listing phase of Census of India 2011. The data was updated in 2015 by conducting door-to-door survey. The digitisation of the updated information has been completed.
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday cleared the National Population Register. The National Population Register is set to commence from April next year. The National Population Register (NPR) is a Register of usual residents of the country. It is mandatory for every usual resident of India to register in the NPR.
The budget for the National Population Register has been cleared by the Union Cabinet. Slated to commence from April next year, the NPR is an exercise to create an identity database of every citizen of the country.
The NPR will be prepared at the local (village/sub-Town), sub-district, district, state and national level under provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.
According to the website of the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, the objective of the NPR is to create a comprehensive identity database of every usual resident in the country. The database will contain demographic as well as biometric particulars.
