The Health Ministry stressed that the current case is an isolated case, similar to the earlier 30 cases reported in India from July 2022 onwards. It clarified that the latest case is not a part of the current public health emergency (reported by WHO) which is regarding clade 1 of mpox.
The first case of the new variant outside Africa was earlier confirmed in Sweden after Congo recorded over 27,000 cases and more than 1,000 deaths since January last year. The new clade Ib strain of the virus is now spreading rapidly in Kenya and other African countries.
The ship alerted authorities that "one of its crew members of Indian nationality showed cyst-like skin lesions predominantly on the chest and face," the ministry said in a statement, adding the person had been isolated from the rest of the crew.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern on August 14.
WHO said there have been more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths in more than a dozen countries across Africa this year, which already exceeded last year’s figures. So far, more than 96 per cent of all cases and deaths are in a single country -- Congo.
