The showers came against the backdrop of Cyclone Biparjoy's landfall in Rajasthan on Sunday, which caused massive flooding in several regions of the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), as reported by the news agency ANI on Sunday, stated that "monsoon is likely to hit Eastern India in two to three days" due to the influence of Cyclone Biparjoy.
IMD has predicted light to moderate intensity rainfall in Delhi-NCR region ahead of the cyclone Biparjoy landfall in Gujarat. The weather department has also predicted rainfall in parts of Punjab, Haryana and UP.
Monsoon will start advancing from June 18 onwards, the weather department informed on Wednesday.
The central and western parts of India, which form the core monsoon zone, may face challenges in coping with the drying effects due to inadequate rainfall early in the season, Skymet Weather said. The southwest monsoon reached Kerala on June 8, a week after the usual date of June 1.
The southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 with a standard deviation of about seven days.
Cyclone Biparjoy UPDATES: Met office said the severe cyclonic storm is likely to move nearly northwards and intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm. It would then move north-northwestwards during the subsequent three days.
Moonsoon update: Earlier, there was a forecast that Monsoon might enter Kerala on June 7.
Kerala normally experiences the onset of the southwest monsoon on June 1 with a standard variance of roughly seven days.
