The UAE’s state-run WAM news agency reported the interception, saying that “the attack did not result in any losses, as the remnants of the ballistic missile fell outside the populated areas.”
The Japanese and South Korean militaries said the missile was launched on a high trajectory, apparently to avoid the territorial spaces of neighbors, and reached a maximum altitude of 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) and traveled 800 kilometers (497 miles) before landing in the sea.
North Korea has been ramping up its testing activity in recent months, including seven rounds of weapons launches so far in 2022.
Japan's Prime Minister's Office and Defence Ministry said the North Korean weapon was possibly a ballistic missile, but didn't immediately provide more details.
It's the second known test-flight of a hypersonic missile since North Korea first tested such a weapon last September. It wasn't immediately known if both are the exactly same type of hypersonic missile.
The solid-fuel, battlefield missile developed by DRDO is based on Prithvi Defence Vehicle from the Indian ballistic missile programme.
The weapon, developed for the IAF, can neutralise targets in a range up to 10 km.
The launch was the latest in a series of tests of Zircon, which is set to enter service next year.
