The Japanese government said North Korea fired what was a possible ballistic missile. The Japanese coast guard said it has warned ships around the country’s coasts about falling objects and urged them to stay away.
It was the most significant missile test by North Korea since January, when it fired an Hwasong-12 intermediate-range missile capable of reaching the US territory of Guam.
The VSHORADS is an air defence system designed and developed indigenously by Hyderabad-based Research Centre Imarat of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
North Korea has dialed up its testing activities to a record pace in 2022, testing more than 30 ballistic weapons, including its first intercontinental ballistic missiles since 2017, as it continues to expand its military capabilities amid a prolonged stalemate in nuclear diplomacy.
Brahmos missile accidental firing: The officials who have been terminated from service include a Group Captain, a Wing Commander and a Squadron Leader, the IAF said in a statement.
The user training launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile.
The United States has vowed to push for additional international sanctions if North Korea conducts a nuclear test, but the prospects for meaningful new punitive measures are dim with the UN Security Council’s permanent members divided.
The launch came a day after the U.S. aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan concluded a three-day naval drill with South Korea in the Philippine Sea, apparently their first drill involving a carrier since November 2017.
The Tsirkon missile has been test-fired several times from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and a nuclear-powered submarine.
MRSAMs were test-fired from the Integrated Test Range launch pad-III at Chandipur near Balasore before noon, sources said.
"MRSAM-Army missile system flight tested from ITR Balasore, Odisha at around 1030 hours intercepting a high-speed aerial target at long range," DRDO said in a tweet.
As war with Ukraine continues, Russia Saturday said that the United States does not allow Kyiv to agree to the conditions put forward by Moscow in the negotiations.
Details of the missile explosion weren’t immediately known. But the launch, the 10th of its kind this year, shows North Korea is determined to press ahead on its push to modernize its weapons arsenal and pressure its rivals into making concessions amid dormant denuclearization talks.
The Government has taken serious note of the incident. A formal high-level inquiry has been ordered, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in Rajya Sabha.
India on Friday said it accidentally fired a missile two days back that landed in Pakistan and that the "deeply regrettable" incident was caused by a technical malfunction in the course of its routine maintenance.
Foreign Office spokesperson said Pakistan has taken note of the Press Statement by India's Press Information Bureau’s Defence Wing regretting the “accidental firing” of the Indian-origin missile into Pakistani territory on March 9 due to “technical malfunction” and the decision to hold a high-level Court of Inquiry.
The NSA also called out the Indian authorities for not informing Pakistan immediately that an "inadvertent launch of a cruise missile had taken place".
The government has taken serious view of accidental missile firing and ordered high-level court of inquiry, Defence Ministry added.
North Korea later halted testing activity after the start of the Winter Olympics in China, which is its last major ally and economic pipeline.
