Israel's military reported that a surface-to-surface missile launched from Yemen struck an uninhabited area in central Israel, resulting in no injuries. Just before the impact, air raid sirens had blared in Tel Aviv and throughout central Israel, prompting residents to seek shelter.
The missiles were reportedly launched 10 minutes apart in a northeastern direction from the town of Jangyon in southeastern North Korea. The reports said the first missile landed in the waters off the North's eastern city of Chongjin.
The missile launch happened after hundreds of balloons carrying trash and excrement across the heavily fortified border to South Korea on Wednesday as a "gift". Tensions have increased between the two Koreas due to weapons tests by North and combined military exercises in the South.
The test was “defensive in nature and not targeted against any country,” the ministry said, giving no other details such as whether it actually struck an object, how many interceptors were fired and where they landed.
