The 34-year-old, who has won four gold, a silver in her five previous appearances at the event, will face Japan's Tsubasa Komura in the semifinals.
The four-time gold-medallist at this event is making a return to her preferred weight division after competing in the 51kg category, which was made an Olympic category before the 2012 Games.
The Rajya Sabha MP fought six bouts during the trials and won all despite facing younger rivals in the likes of World Championships silver-medallist Sarjubala Devi among others.
The Olympic bronze-medallist had announced her decision to shuffle between 48kg and 51kg categories, depending on tournaments.
If Mary Kom is selected for the tournament after trials later this month, her participation at the IOC event would become uncertain.
The ace India pugilist said that the training sessions have been going really well and that the national coaches are helping her a lot to prepare for the coveted event.
"Let me put this on record, I have never said anything like Shiva's career being over and he should be dropped from the TOP scheme," says Mary Kom.
