Saturday's incident took place in Jungle Dera village where hundreds of locals gathered after Maghrib prayers following annoucements that a man had torn some pages of the Holy Quran and later set them on fire.
Shahrukh Sheikh was apprehended by residents of Damu Nagar some 10 days ago when he had gone to check on his autorickshaw that he had parked there. The mob soon started hitting him claiming he may be a thief and then dumped him in an isolated place nearby, the official informed.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)-Subdivision Surinder Singh, who had arrived for a postmortem on behalf of the district police, said that despite keeping the body for 72 hours and advertisements for identification, no identity of the man could be established.
The incident took place in Shekhpura village under Azeem Nagar police station when the man asked his neighbours not to pluck the fruits.
