October 2 marks Gandhi Jayanti. It is Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary. The day is observed across the world as International Day of Non-Violence. The world is aware of Mahatma Gandhi, also popularly called Bapu or Father of the nation, and his tireless contribution to India's freedom struggle. Here are some lesser-known facts about Mahatma Gandhi, and his life:

Before Nathuram Godse shot him in the chest in the grounds of Birla House in Delhi on January 30, 1948, there were four to five attempts on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, one of them in Pune 14 years earlier.
It was a stormy, January day in 1924. Mahatma Gandhi was brought into the Sassoon Hospital for an operation to remove his appendix. But then the power went off due to the raging thunderstorm, and a flashlight was used but that too flickered to death while the British army surgeon was wielding the scalpel. Finally a hurricane lamp came to the rescue.
A short handwritten letter by Mahatma Gandhi 80-years-ago on the same day the World War II broke out, wishing the "afflicted (Jewish) people" an "era of peace", has been unveiled for the first time by the National Library of Israel.

IAS officer Nidhi Choudhari's tweet had kicked off a controversy in Maharashtra. Political parties demanded action against her for her tweet. The tweet has since been deleted.
The Gandhi Hall was built in Lenasia after the apartheid-era government demolished the original Gandhi Hall in the city center where the lawyer, who would become the Mahatma, held many community meetings to mobilize the local community into protesting the unjust laws of the time.
