A Delhi Court on Wednesday acquitted Journalist Priya Ramani in a criminal defamation case filed by former Union Minister MJ Akbar for accusing him of sexual misconduct.
Journalist Priya Ramani on Saturday said she used the word "predator" to emphasise the difference in age, influence and power between herself and M.J. Akbar while recording her statement as a witness before a Delhi court in the defamation complaint filed against her by the former Union minister.

Former Union Minister M J Akbar also claimed that he was not selective in filing a defamation suit against Priya Ramani and did not intend to target her. Priya Ramani was first in the list of more than a dozen women who made public allegations of sexual harassment against M J Akbar. The allegations were made at the height of #MeToo movement in India during 2018.
In the wake of MeToo campaign against sexual harassment, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi recently asked all political parties to constitute an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) to hear complaints of affected women in the workplace.
Akbar's counsel and senior advocate Geeta Luthra and lawyer Sandeep Kapur told the court that Ramani had damaged Akbar's reputation which he had built over the years through hard work.
The woman journalist said a relationship based on 'coercion and abuse of power' is not 'consensual'.

The journalist, in a piece in Washington Post, shared her experience of allegedly being sexually, verbally and emotinally abused by Akbar.
Akbar, who had resigned from the Union Council of Ministers on October 17, has concluded the recording of his statement.
Editor-turned-politician, Akbar is seeking to prosecute Ramani under Section 500 (punishment for defamation) of the IPC.
Akbar's name had cropped up in the social media campaign #Metoo against alleged sexual harassment when he was in Nigeria.

MJ Akbar accused Ramani of “wilfully” and “maliciously” making imputations against him with the ulterior motive of maligning his reputation and political standing.
