Kofi Annan served two terms as UN secretary General from January 1, 1997, to December 31, 2006. He died at the age of 80.
The first black African to carry the role of top diplomat across the world, Annan served two terms from 1997 to 2006.
Annan raised concerns over the actions of President Abdulla Yameen's regime regarding independent institutions, which he claimed were in violation of the spirit of democracy.
