Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi breathed his last at a Chennai hospital on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, after a prolonged illness. The 94-year-old leader served as Tamil Nadu CM for five terms. The last rites of Kalaignar, as he was famously known, took place on August 8 at Chennai's famous Marina Beach.

Karunaindhi, who first became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1969, following the death of his mentor CN Annadurai was elected four more times as the head of the govt.
Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi have worked together in a Tamil film called Mani Magudam in 1966.
The Ministry informed that the former DMK chief will be accorded a state funeral on Wednesday.

Karunanidhi passes away: A five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi was admitted to Kauvery Hospital here on July 28 and was undergoing treatment.
During his school time, Karunanidhi was more interested in drama, poetry and literature.
Karunanidhi was survived by two wives. The 94-year-old leader had been married three times and had six children. His three wives were late Padmavathy, Dayalu and Rajathi.

DMK president M Karunanidhi passed away at 94 on Tuesday.
After a dip in his blood pressure, five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi was admitted to Kauvery Hospital on July 28 and has since been under treatment.
Kovind was accompanied by Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
On July 31, the hospital said Karunanidhi will have to be remain warded for an extended period owing to age related health issues including altered liver function.
"I have just met him in Kauvery hospital, he is better and is recovering well," Palaniswami said even as thousands of supporters of the DMK chief continue to throng outside the hospital.
