As many as 149 passengers, including Indians, were killed when a Boeing 737 MAX plane operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed soon after taking off from Addis Ababa.
According to a report, the airline has raised loan worth Rs 1,100 crore and a non-fund based credit facility of Rs 950 crore from PNB.
More aircraft of beleaguered private carrier Jet Airways have been grounded, mainly due to non-payment to lessors, taking the total number to 49, senior DGCA official said on Thursday.
Around 15 aircraft of Jet Airways have been grounded by the lessors due to non-payment. Jet is trying to raise funds for its operations as it has a debt of around Rs 8,200 crore currently.
Jet Airways on Thursday said that it has grounded six more aircraft, taking the total to 19, over its non-repayment of dues. "Further to our letter dated 27 February 2019, we now write to inform you that an additional six aircraft have been grounded due to non-payment of amounts outstanding to lessors under their respective lease agreements," the airline said in a regulatory filing on Thursday, IANS reported.
In the wake of escalating tensions with India, Pakistan on Wednesday closed its airspace for commercial flights and suspended flight operations across major airports, including in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, for an indefinite period.
These flights were cancelled following grounding of six Boeing 737 planes due to non-payment of lease rentals.
The airline, which is grappling with acute financial woes, cancelled around 20 flights on Tuesday as three more Boeing 737 aircraft were grounded.
Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal has told the State Bank of India (SBI) that he is ready to invest up to Rs 700 crore in the airline on the condition that his stake does not fall below 25 per cent.
Goyal’s offer comes against the backdrop of strategic partner Etihad reportedly putting forward strict conditions, including that Goyal should give up control, for infusing funds into the crisis-hit carrier.
According to reports, Etihad might have to make an open offer in case it is hiking the stake in Jet Airways.
On the National Stock Exchange, the stocks slumped 4.57 per cent to the low of Rs 248.
The seven-day offer, which commences Wednesday, is applicable to both business and economy class bookings as well as for some of the codeshare flights operated by Jet Airways’ partner airlines,a release said.
Nearly 124 aircrafts, including Boeing 777-300 ERs, Airbus 330-200/ 300 and Boeing 737 Max 8 are operated by Jet Airways.
The staff has partially been paid for September by the airline, while the full salaries of October and November remain unpaid.
The airline currently operates one daily service each on Kochi-Doha, Mangalore-Abu Dhabi, Mangalore-Dubai and Lucknow-Abu Dhabi.
The accused, identified as J Poddar, was apprehended by the CISF after he was repeatedly heard making remarks about blowing up the plane while talking on the phone.
Mathai is the second independent director to quit Jet Airways board in two weeks after Vikram Singh Mehta.
The airline had last week posted a net loss of Rs 1,261 crore for the three months ended September.
Around 1,600 Jet Airways pilots along with the cash-starved airline's engineers and senior management officials have been paid only 50 per cent of the September salary.
