World's biggest chariot festival - Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra - was held in Puri, Odisha under guidelines set by the Supreme Court of India. The deities of Lord Jagannath (also referred to as Bhagwan Vishnu), Balabhadra (his brother) and Subhadra (his sister) travelled on a chariot for a nine-day sojourn to Gundicha temple.
This will be the first time Jagannath Rath Yatra won't take place in last 284 years. There have been interruptions in organising of the Rath Yatra but it had been going on continuously since 1737. This year, the Yatra has been stopped keeping in mind the coronavirus outbreak.
Hours after Supreme Court stayed annual Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, the Odisha government said it would abide by the orders of the top court staying this year's Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri and elsewhere in the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra commemorates Jagannath's annual visit to Gundicha Temple via Mausi Maa Temple (maternal aunt's home) near Saradha Bali, Puri.
