Amid the beating of gongs, cymbals, blowing of conch shells, the deities were brought out of the Gundicha temple and taken in chariots in a procession called 'Pahandi.'
The Gujarat government on Monday approached the high court for modification of its earlier order staying the procession of Lord Jagannath Yatra in Ahmedabad, which was supposed to be taken out on June 23.
In the wake of Gujarat High Court's stay on taking out the Rath Yatra procession of Lord Jagannath in Ahmedabad in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the temple authorities decided to move the chariot of the deity within the premises of the religious structure on Monday.
The Rath Yatra is set to be a low-key affair in West Bengal this year, as several organising committees of the annual car festival have called off festivities to avoid public gatherings in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra commemorates Jagannath's annual visit to Gundicha Temple via Mausi Maa Temple (maternal aunt's home) near Saradha Bali, Puri. As part of Ratha Yatra, the deities Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra and younger sister Devi Subhadra, along with Sudarshan, are taken out in a procession out of the main shrine of Jagannath Temple and placed in the Ratha (Chariot) which are ready in front of the Temple.
Wheels construction for Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra which is likely to be held on June 23, are ready. The preparations are being carried out to celebrate the nine-day festival with great pomp and show at the coastal town of Puri.
The chariot festival began today amid tight security arrangements with lakhs of devotees congregating in the pilgrim town to witness the grand event.
