INX Media case: Delhi HC dismisses both anticipatory bail pleas of Former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram
Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed both anticipatory bail pleas of Former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union minister P Chidambaram, on Thursday, challenged before the adjudicating authority, PMLA, the Enforcement Directorate's notice to vacate his Jor Bagh residence here, which was earlier attached by the agency in the INX Media corruption case. The father-son duo is accused in the case.
The eviction notice was served on Wednesday evening following an earlier order of the Adjudicating Authority, PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act), by which the attachment of the property was confirmed.
Mukerjea, who was granted pardon in the case by the court on July 4, appeared before special judge Arun Bhardwaj and accepted the conditions put on her.
Earlier, while opposing the anticipatory bail plea, the CBI and the ED had asserted that custodial interrogation of Chidambaram was required in the case as he was evasive during questioning.
It is understood that Karti was confronted with certain statements of the other accused and witnesses in the case. Officials said he might be called again for questioning.
Karti was arrested on February 28, 2018 by the CBI for allegedly accepting money to facilitate the FIPB clearance to INX Media. He was later granted bail.
Both CBI and the Enforcement Directorate are investigating the foreign investment clearance granted to the Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006 and the INX Media in 2007 when Chidambaram was the finance minister in the UPA government.
Chidambaram was represented in the hearing through advocates Pramod Kumar Dubey and Arshdeep Singh.
An ED official said that the former leader was summoned last month by the agency for questioning.
The central probe agency has earlier grilled Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram in this case and has also attached his assets worth an estimated Rs 54 crore, located in India and abroad.
Chidambaram in May earlier this year had approached the trial court for protection from arrest in Aircel-Maxis case before approaching the Delhi High Court in connection with the INX Media case.
The rejoinder submissions were filed before Special Judge O P Saini through advocates P K Dubey and Arshdeep Singh.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said the issue of Karti Chidambaram visiting abroad is not an “important matter” requiring urgent hearing.
Earlier the Delhi High Court had extended Chidambaram's interim protection from arrest in the INX Media money laundering case till October 25.
Reacting to the order, Karti tweeted, "A bizarre and outlandish provisional attachment order which is not based on law of facts but on crazy conjectures. This is meant only to grab headlines".
The Enforcement Directorate had issued a provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for attachment of Indian assets in Kodaikanal and Ooty in Tamil Nadu and a flat in Delhi's Jorbagh.
