The Proteas selection committee has picked up the same Test team that toured West Indies in June. The hosts, however, have included three more players in their squad.
India are supposed to play three ODIs in South Africa and the biggest question now is whether the country needs two white ball captains which can potentially lead to a clash of ideas.
"Indi's tour of South Africa, 2021-22, will proceed with the revised dates and itinerary. The team will participate in a three-match Test series followed by a three-match ODI series starting December 26th, 2021," read the BCCI's statement in decisions made at the AGM.
India will now tour South Africa for only three Tests and as likely ODIs. The four-match T20I series has been postponed and new dates will be announced later.
The tour comprises three Tests, three ODIs and four T20 Internationals and is scheduled to start on December 17 at Johannesburg. The players will remain in a water-tight environment during the near seven-week tour.
Omicron variant of Covid was detected and flagged to the world by South Africa and as things stand now, there have been multiple hospitalisations in the Gauteng province, where Johannesburg, the venue of the first two Tests beginning December 17, is located.
Cricket South Africa has postponed a round of domestic games after some of the team members tested COVID-19 positive on arrival, raising fresh concerns for the India tour later this month.
