Thousands gathered in Mizoram to protest the Indian government's decision to fence the India-Myanmar border and end the free movement agreement. Organised by the Zo Re-Unification Organisation (Zoro), the rallies in Zokhawthar and Vaphai villages underscored demands for preserving free movement.
CM Lalduhoma said he had urged the home minister not to construct a fence on the Mizoram side even if the Manipur side of the Indo-Myanmar border is fenced. Lalduhoma expressed optimism that the Centre may not fence the 510-km-long Mizoram-Myanmar border.
Myanmar is one of India's strategic neighbours and it shares a 1,640-kilometre border with a number of northeastern states, including militancy-hit Nagaland and Manipur. India, recently, called for a cessation of fighting between Myanmar's military and the anti-junta groups near the border.
The first phase of "Operation Sunrise" was conducted three months ago along the Indo-Myanmar border, during which a number of camps of north-east-based militant groups were busted.
