According to reports, major technology companies are stating that additional time is needed to set up manufacturing and assembly facilities in compliance with the latest regulations.
While the new rules were initially set to take effect immediately, the government has provided a grace period to ease the transition for companies.
In a notification, the DGFT said that the import policy of these products "has been amended from free to restricted with immediate effect".
The directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a notification that the imports are free if the price is above Rs 50 per kg.
In a special notification issued by the Sri Lankan finance ministry, the ban was imposed on a total of 300 items including chocolates, perfumes, makeup, and shampoo among several other products.
As per the notice, the ban would remain in place till the end of this fiscal year which ends in mid-July.
