One week after Helene slammed into the Florida Panhandle and devastated wide swaths of half a dozen states, untold thousands remained cut off around Asheville, North Carolina, with many roads impassable and telecommunications equipment damaged or destroyed.
Helene had intensified into a Category 4 storm as it moved towards Florida's northwest coast and made landfall on Thursday. It left millions of homes without power, triggered mudslides, snapped trees and inundated entire households during its trail of destruction on Friday.
Hurricane Helene: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted an above-average Atlantic hurricane season this year because of record-warm ocean temperatures. Helene is forecast to be one of the largest storms in breadth to hit the region in years.
