50 flights get bomb threats, Centre taking steps to ban perpetrators from flying

Over the last 9 days, nearly 170 flights, domestic and international, have received bomb threats. These threats turned out to bo hoaxes but caused widespread panic and financial losses to airlines.
The flights for which bomb threats have been received include IndiGo, Vistara, Akasa and Air India. In the last 9 days, bomb threats have been received by more than 150 flights operated by Indian airlines.
The Railway Protection Force also joined the operation, but no explosive substances were found, police said. "The mobile number was tracked and it was found that Sunil Sangwan (35), a Sergeant in the Indian Air Force, made the call," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) Hareesh H P said.
Delhi-Pune Spicejet flight hoax bomb call: "On Jan 12, a call was received at SpiceJet reservation office of a bomb in the aircraft scheduled to operate flight SG 8938 (Delhi-Pune). The boarding for flight had not yet started. The aircraft was moved to an isolation bay," the spokesperson said.
Mumbai hoax bomb threat: The man-made another call to the control room about a bomb placed in Zaveri Bazaar, following which the police swung into action.
Following the threat call, a thorough check was undertaken by the security agencies to ascertain if any explosive items were planted in the flight.
Railway administration and security force personnel, along with the bomb squad, searched the coaches and halted the train late in the night.
The police traced the caller from the mobile number to the Shil Phata area in neighboring Thane.
A 22-year-old man onboard a Delhi-Patna flight was apprehended on Monday for allegedly making a hoax call to Delhi's Police Control Room.
The anonymous call was traced to a man who was believed to be of unsound mind, they said.
Authorities at the Delhi Airport had received a bomb threat call following which the flight operations were affected at the IGI Airport. The flight operations were later resumed after the bomb threat was found to be a hoax, following an extensive search operation.
