Since the start of the Northeast monsoon in October, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry regions have experienced about 43 per cent excess rainfall, a weather official said.
According to data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kerala received 589.9 mm rainfall in October this year, the highest since the year 1901 and more than double what the state got last year during this month.
It was on October 17 that Kerala saw rainfall in excess of 200 mm; October 18 and 19 saw Uttarakhand receive rainfall in excess of 200, 300 400 and even 500 mm rainfall whereas on October 20, it was sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim that saw extreme rainfall events
IMD sounded an Orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur districts indicating heavy rainfall on October 20.
As a precautionary measure, the district police has halted the Badrinath Yatra, and passengers en route to Badrinath were stopped in safe places.
