Navneet Rana, the MP from Amravati in Maharashtra, and her MLA-husband Ravi Rana were arrested on April 23 by the Mumbai police after the couple announced that they would recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside CM Thackeray's private residence `Matoshree'.

It also said that the couple's announcement to recite Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's house did not have the intention of "subverting the government by violent means'', and although their statements are "blameworthy" they cannot be stretched too far to be brought under the ambit of the sedition charge.

The loudspeakers row started when Raj Thackeray on April 12 gave an ultimatum to the Maharashtra government to remove loudspeakers from mosques by May 3, failing which, he warned, MNS workers will play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers.
Reiterating that it's not a religious but a social issue, Raj Thackeray said, "It's not only about mosques, there are several temples where illegal loudspeakers are running. I have already made it clear that it's (illegal loudspeakers) not a religious issue but a social issue."
Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana were granted bail by special judge RN Rokade of a special court on a surety of Rs 50,000 and the conditions that they shall not speak to the media on any subjects related to the case and tamper with evidence.

The couple is currently in judicial custody. While Navneet Rana is lodged in Byculla prison, her husband is in Taloja jail in neighboring Navi Mumbai. The Mumbai Sessions court will soon pass the judgment on their plea for bail.
The Mumbai police had told a special court that while on the face of it the plan of Rana couple to recite Hanuman Chalisa outside the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's residence may look innocent, but it was in fact a "big plot" to challenge the MVA government.
