The Gyanvapi management committee has urgently approached the Allahabad High Court to contest a Varanasi court's decision allowing Hindu prayers in the mosque's basement. This follows the Varanasi district court permitting a priest to conduct prayers before idols in the Gyanvapi Masjid.
Uttar Pradesh news: The court had asked the district administration to make the necessary arrangements within the next seven days in Varanasi.
In an earlier order on January 17, the Varanasi court had directed that the district magistrate should take charge of the cellar. But it had not then given any directions on the right to offer prayers there.
While the VHP welcomed the order, Muslim side counsel Mumtaz Ahmed said they will challenge it in the high court.

The court had ordered to conduct a survey after the petitioners claimed the mosque was constructed over a pre-existing temple. Four senior officials of the ASI were also present in the court when the report was submitted.
The court fixed December 18 as the next date of hearing in the matter.
