A rare severe geomagnetic storm alert was issued for the first time in nearly 20 years, after days of solar activity that was expected to begin from Friday and last throughout the weekend. These storms cause auroras (northern lights) and can disrupt power and communications.
The warning for a severe G4 geomagnetic storm was issued by the National Weather Space Weather Prediction Centre, the first in nearly 20 years. The warning was issued after days of solar activity associated with a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster.
Geomagnetic storm means discharge of coronal mass ejection in significant amounts with high-intensity energy coming towards the earth.
The storms are serious and interfere with a number of important technologies, including GPS signalling and satellite communications. They can also cause damage to surface electrical grids.
