Dense fog prevailed at several places, affecting normal life. Road, rail and air traffic was affected due to the fog.
In recent times, phirans have undergone some drastic changes.
The Railways had to cancel 36 trains, reschedule 30 while 85 trains were running late due to fog across the northern region, according to official data.
The low visibility also led to the cancellation of 21 trains and six flights. 24 trains have also been rescheduled due to fog in several parts of northern India.
As of December 31 midnight, 400 mail and express trains reached their destinations late after getting delayed on account of fog. As of January 1, 2018, 6:30am, 56 trains arrived late, 20 were rescheduled and 15 trains were cancelled.
As per ANI report, 36 trains were delayed, 13 cancelled and 2 rescheduled due to low visibility and other operational reasons.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius during the day, with lows of 10 degrees Celsius.
"There was moderate fog in the morning reducing the visibility to 500 meters. The sky will be partly cloudy during the day," an India Meteorological Department official said.
As per ANI report, 25 trains have been delayed, 12 cancelled and two rescheduled owing to foggy conditions.
The fog also resulted in delayed departure and arrival of seven flights this morning, airport officials added.
Around 10 trains were cancelled, 20 delayed, and at least five rescheduled due to fog in several parts of northern India, ANI reported.
Giving some relief to Delhiites, the weatherman had predicted that the sky would be mostly clear during the day on Tuesday.
