Delhi ramps up firecracker ban enforcement for a cleaner Diwali, deploying 300 police teams, seizing 19,000 kg of firecrackers, and coordinating with neighbouring states to reduce pollution.
Diwali 2024: Maharashtra imposed a complete ban on firecrackers and allowed only green crackers that produce around 30% less pollution than traditional ones. Moreover, the Mumbai Police banned the use and sale of sky lanterns from October 23 to November 24.
The national capital continued to record poor air quality on Monday with an Air Quality Index at 221 as of 9 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. The air quality was also in "poor" category in NCR including Ghaziabad (265), Noida (243), and Greater Noida (228).

Punjab Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer said, "Firecrackers will be allowed only for two hours on Diwali night from 8 to 10 pm. Apart from Diwali, crackers will be permitted for one hour from 4 am to 5 am & one hour from 9 to 10 pm on November 8, Prakash Purab day of Sri Guru Nanak Dev."
Online sale/delivery of firecrackers will also be banned in Delhi. The restriction will remain in force till January 1, 2023.
As compared to previous years, there has been a slight fall in accident cases of fire triggered by burning of crackers. According to data, while 271 fire incidents were registered in 2018, it came down to 205 last year. In 2019, there were 245 cases.
The team disguised themselves as vendors from Haryana who wanted to purchase firecrackers from Delhi.
