The fire began on Tuesday morning in the copper roof of the Old Stock Exchange, or Boersen, spread to much of the building and the roof, parts of which also collapsed, and destroyed the building’s interior.
According to witnesses, the fire incident at the hospital caused chaos but the police controlled the situation and fire brigade officials extinguished the flame.
At least eight fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the blaze, as thick smoke and flames were seen billowing from the shanties, officials informed.
The fire brigade official said the blaze was controlled and there was no loss of life. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, he added.
According to reports, a short circuit in a transformer caused the fire in the hut. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has extended his condolences for the deceased families.
BJP MLA from Gandhi Nagar, Anil Bajpai, voiced his concern over the lack of a fire station in the area. I met the Lieutenant Governor in pursuance of this matter and the file is in process, he added.
