Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said that the Centre failed to control the tractor march going out of hands in the national capital.
The police statement came as the national capital witnessed violent scenes during a tractor parade by farmers who entered the city in their tractors from different points to press for their demand of repealing the three new agri laws.
Some groups of farmers started going back to their respective sit-in sites on Tuesday evening after hours of chaos during their tractor parade against the farm laws, but thousands of other protesters were still in several areas, including ITO, Nangloi, and Mukarba Chowk, of the national capital.
Protesting farmers on Tuesday swarmed the Red Fort during a 'tractor rally' on Republic Day amid police attempts to block them from proceeding towards central Delhi, barged into the 17th-century monument, climbed up the ramparts, and waved farmer union flags and banners and even hoisted a pennant. All this happened after thousands of farmers riding tractors and motorcycles thronged the otherwise busy ITO intersection. Police and other security personnel deployed at the Red Fort were seen lathi-charging the protesters at the monument even as the former were clearly outnumbered by the farmers. A member of the Sankyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of 41 unions, leading the protest against the three Central farm laws at several border points of Delhi, said those who broke the barricades belonged to the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee.
A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde siad that it will not pass any order on Centre's plea against proposed tractor rally or any other kind of protest by farmers on Republic Day. "We have said that it is for the Police to decide. We are not going to pass the orders. You are the authority to take action," the CJI said. The Centre then withdrew its application.
