Columns of steam that experts had warned could contain toxic gases shot upward when the bright red molten rock tumbled into the Atlantic Ocean at 11:00 pm on Tuesday.
The blasts are sending ash up to 4,500 meters (almost 15,000 feet) into the air, the Guardia Civil police force said in a tweet. Local authorities advised people to protect themselves from the ash with face masks.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or death, but govt officials were scrambling to respond to the Monday eruption, which was even bigger than the first eruption that occurred on Friday.
